Michael E. Smith is a veteran trial lawyer with nearly five decades of legal experience. Based in Oklahoma City, Michael represents both plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury litigation, combining deep legal insight with a genuine appreciation for the people he serves. His passion for understanding how things work and why injuries occur has made him a trusted advocate in complex, high-stakes cases.
Michael earned his law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law after completing his Bachelor of Business Management at the University of Oklahoma. Before entering the legal field, he began his career in a training program with a major property and casualty insurance company. He quickly advanced to manage a 35-person office responsible for all aspects of P&C operations. His early exposure to investigations and a particularly compelling conversation with the spouse of a practicing attorney inspired him to pursue law.
He is admitted to practice in the State of Oklahoma, the U.S. District Courts for the Western, Northern, and Eastern Districts of Oklahoma, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Michael has been a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Oklahoma County Bar Association since 1978 and has been a member of the Federal Bar Association since 1996. He also served as a school board member for Belle Isle Charter School, part of the Oklahoma City Public Schools, from 2006 to 2008.
Over the course of his career, Michael has successfully settled and tried numerous personal injury cases to verdict, earning a reputation for being fair yet firm. He is known for his ability to analyze complex factual scenarios and understand the mechanics of injuries, products, and human error. His clients appreciate his accessibility, assertiveness, and empathy—qualities that make him not just a litigator, but a trusted counselor.
Outside of his practice, Michael enjoys walking his two dogs each morning. He also enjoys fly fishing and sporting clays with friends and family. He and his wife, Barbara, share a love for movies, Broadway shows, and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Their son practices law in New York City, while their daughters are thriving in central Oklahoma in fields including oil and gas, education, and marketing.
